𝙄𝙩𝙣𝙚 𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙩𝙚 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙚 𝙠𝙤 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙘𝙝𝙪𝙧𝙬𝙖 𝙍𝙖𝙝𝙞 𝙝𝙤 !!!!!
𝙔𝙚𝙝 t𝙤𝙪 𝙕𝙪𝙡𝙢 𝙝𝙖𝙞𝙞𝙞 !!!! 𝙕𝙪𝙡𝙢 !!!! All the things and more I had to listen to when people got to know I was on a #weaning mission 🤷
Jokes apart , although it’s ideal that you breastfeed your child for 2.5 years , it also depends a lot on your situation , diet , mental health and other circumstances .
In my case , when I was told to breastfeed my baby for the first time I didn’t think it’s going to be a big deal until it became one. What started off as HOW-DIFFICULT-COULD-IT-POSSIBLY-BE quickly turned into a teary affair of THIS-IS-NO-LESS-THAN-A-NIGHTMARE !!!!
It did get better with time but it was no less nerve wrecking for me ; my daughter would feed through the night and every morning felt terrible as I woke up tired , aching and drained. My temperament worsened with each day with the lack of proper rest and my daughter , despite being clearly interested in solids ,would refuse solids for breastfeed .
It was then only that I decided that come her first birthday and I am going to wean my daughter off.
Only if it was that easy…..
MAKING THE DECISION
As soon as my daughter aka #gulabjamun turned one I was excited to give myself the gift of sleeping through the night.
I decided to wean her !!!! I decided to do a mix of baby led weaning and the traditional weaning method.
But no Matter what I offered to her she wouldn’t have more than a spoonful of it. With this appetite I knew it would take her a year to let go 🤦 which was not what I wanted , but I didn’t want to push her into it either.
And a month passed with me constantly preparing purees and what not ,and her refusing everything 🤦
I would have had just given up on the whole SLEEP THROUGH THE NIGHT fantasy but suddenly something got into my daughter and she became terribly cranky and would bite into anything and everything that came her way.
𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 , 𝙢𝙮 𝙛𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙙 , 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙙𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙢𝙖 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖 𝙗𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙮.
It was more than I could take and so I tried a trick ; to apply paracetamol paste so that the bitterness would turn my daughter away. It didn’t work for my daughter because she would still want to feed and would wipe away the paracetamol with her tounge🤦. And then one day just like that I applied some black electric tape and lo and behold !!!! It worked !!!!! My daughter was so scared she wouldn’t even lie on my lap 🙍
The first day was a nightmare……
THE FIRST THREE DAYS
I had been trying to wean my daughter for almost two months but scaring her off with black tape was what worked for us 💪
The first night was terrible as beturaani woke up frequent times during the night but couldn’t fall asleep without breast milk. She clearly hated me then and I was rewarded with quite some slaps during the weaning period 🤪
Bananas , sooji milk and homemade cake helped us through the night. Since I was totally unprepared for the sudden weaning I didn’t look up Google nor did I experiment with solids.
I knew what my beturaani liked to eat and I picked up a few , easy to eat items to help us sail through the night.
As for soothing her to sleep , we took turns to walk her to sleep . It was tiring but it worked #Alhamdulillah .
And by the end of three days the tantrums subsided and I could happily say that beturaani was successfully weaned and happily accepting solids.
WHAT YOU NEED TO BE PREPARED FOR
Presenting to you a list of things you need to be prepared for while you step on this weaning journey #beentheredonethat
- ITS NOT EASY !!!!!
- You Will feel so sorry for your child you would want to give up #totallynormal #ifeelyou
- Your child is going to HATE you 😬 but that’s temporary so be prepared for some TERRIBLE TANTRUMS (and a few slaps and kicks here and there) , but most of all DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY.
- initially your child may reject food in hopes that you might feed him/her out of #mamta 😜 but don’t give in UNLESS your child keeps on refusing all sorts of solids and has been on an empty stomach for more than one to two hours.
- When your little one really gets hungry he/she WILL take some solid.
- The first few days and nights ARE TOUGH so be prepared.
A WORD OF ADVICE; it’s better to start weaning only after 12 months and after your kiddo starts taking solids /purees . This makes the transition from breastfeed to exclusively solids easier.
IMPORTANT TIPS & TRICKS
Winding up the post with a round up of my best kept weaning secrets
❄️ Once you intend to wean off your baby , offer two rakkat salaat ul Hajjat with the intention of asking for Allah SWT’s divine help to make this easy for you and your child. .
❄️If your kiddo is already taking some sort of solids STOCK up your home with all his/her favourite items.
❄️ Here’s the trick – get your child to refuse breastfeed.
How ???? You ask.
Putting black tape was my method for scaring my little one off (trust me I am not a zaalim mom 😜). .
❄️Get some new toys for your little one that you are sure he/she will love. Trust me it will help loads with keeping them distracted and happy.
❄️ Feed solids to your little one when they are in a good mood and try to fill up their tummy before they get hangry for breastmik. .
❄️Some of the things to always have at hand is some bananas , milk , sooji , khichdi , home baked cake , oatmeal , boiled potatoes and yogurt. These things are not only kid-friendly but also easy to feed and fill up the tummy fast.
❄️Night time weaning is always a test of patience , but don’t lose hope , ask for Allah’s help and try to not let your little one nap during the evening. I always kept a bottle of milk , home baked cake , and bananas on my bedside for Night time hunger games 😜 .
❄️For engorgement issues , cold compress , manual expressing , and cabbage leaves helped moi ❤️ .
❄️Stay persistent for three days and the rest would be a breeze insha’Allah. Give sadaqah , make dua and remain steadfast ❤️
